Make-Up Air Services

Have you ever gone out to eat at a restaurant, and when you approach the front doors notice that they are very hard to open, and when you do open them, you feel a large gust of wind rush past you? That is the sign of a building without adequate "make-up" air.

Many people do not understand the necessity of "make-up air" and therefore many structures experience this draft of wind problems. In any commercial hood system the exhaust fan pulls air out of the structure and displaces it into the atmosphere."Make-up" air refers to the air which must be RESUPPLIED to the building while the exhaust fan is pulling the air out.

For example, a commercial kitchen utilizes a exhaust hood which pulls 8,000 CFM of air out of the kitchen space. Without a make up air unit to push 8,000 CFM of air back into the kitchen, the kitchen will run in a 8,000 CFM NEGATIVE DIFFERENTIAL.

What does this mean? In layman's terms, it means that 8,000 Cubic feet of air per minute will be drawn out of the dining room, food preparation areas, offices, or any other space around the structure! This can cause uncontrollable and uncomfortable drafts, not to mention making the doors hard and annoying to open.

To suit every regions need, many different types of make-up air units are available. You can purchase economical units which include an assembly and fan only to deliver outside air directly back into the building. You can buy heated make-up air units which will heat the air BEFORE pushing it into the kitchen. This is great for business operating in cold climates. Also offered is the cooled make-up air, also known as an evaporative cooler. These units will cool the air BEFORE pushing it into the kitchen. These units are very efficient to run and can help save huge amounts in cooling costs!

For you, we have provided a spreadsheet comparing:

Type of Unit vs. Type of Discharge
and listed some possible applications

Downward Discharge

Side Discharge

Heated - heats air before entering

  • Intermittent pilot
  • Direct Fire

Mounts to roof to blow downwards into structure

Can be mounted outside the building on ground level and blown in thru wall

Cooled - cools air before entering
  • Media membrane

Mounts to roof to blow downwards into structure
